SUP in the nature reserve of Ponte a Buriano and Penna: starting at the famous Buriano bridge, which can be seen in Leonardo’s Monna Lisa (La Gioconda), we will sail silently with SUPs along densely wooded banks, passing under striking rocky walls, discovering ravines and hidden waterfalls.
The reserve stretches for about 7 km along the Arno river, from the Roman bridge, Ponte Buriano, to the power station located downstream of the ENEL Penna dam, and includes the artificial reservoir of the dam and surrounding areas. The landscape, characterized by gentle hills surrounding the reservoir, consists of fluvio-lacustrine sediments of different ages, with the occasional presence of crags and vertical walls. From the Ponte a Buriano paper mill to Rondine, the Arno flows between rocks, whereas from Rondine to Penna, the river widens to form the Penna dam. The vegetation consists of oak woods (located mainly on the slopes directly exposed to the reservoir) a small riparian arboreal belt, shrublands, agricultural crops (mainly located along the left bank of the Arno) and a large marsh area in the eastern portion of the reserve.
