SUP in the Fucecchio marshes – These marshes are the largest internal swamp in Italy, and one of the largest in Europe: to lose oneself among its canals with the SUP board is an incredible experience. Participants will discover a landscape that is out of the ordinary, with unique birdlife, and will take advantage of one of the many hunting huts (obviously when the hunting season is over) to eat a sandwich and do some birdwatching.
The marshes, with its rich landscapes and nature, preserve traces of historical events linked to the great Medici and Lorena families. Here significant evidence can be found of the works of man which have shaped and modified the structure of the wetland over the centuries: channel and port systems; remains of ancient and primary waterways; the Medici bridge of Cappiano – central to the regulation of water and fishing, and an important passage on the via Francigena; the Capannone farm complex – one of the main landfalls of the Valdinievole; industrial archeological buildings such as tobacco driers. However, the gravestones scattered among the houses and along the banks, tell a more recent story: the tragedy of the barbaric slaughter of Italians perpetrated by the Germans on 23 August 1944.
