Kayak experience in the Bandella Nature Reserve and Valle dell’Inferno: a beautiful excursion along rocky walls, among reeds flanked by wooded banks. There is no better way to discover these landscapes, flora and fauna, than with a kayak. The name Valle dell’Inferno (the Valley of Hell) dates back to before the construction of the dam when the river in this stretch flowed between rocky gorges making navigation on Foderi (rafts made of timber logs) extremely perilous. The primary characteristic of the basin of the ENEL dam near Levane is a vast body of water (3.4 million cubic meters). From the Romito bridge to the ENEL dam, the Arno river has eroded the lake sediments of different geological periods to a depth of several tens of meters, and in some stretches, for example in the vicinity of Castellare, the river flows into a bed embedded in rocks. The landscape is composed of vast wooded areas (mostly oak trees) on slopes directly exposed to the reservoir and more modest surfaces occupied by scrubland and agricultural crops. Along the banks and in the numerous “borri,” there are arboreal riparian formations dominated by willows and poplars, and riparian formations degraded with black locust. In the Bandella bight there are interesting marsh formations.
