Arno Mills and Fulling Mills Rafting Itinerary

The antique water works of the “Wool Arts” at the gates of Florence

River: Arno
Location: Florence and Fiesole
Itinerary: Mills & Fulling Mills
Best time: from May to October
Length: 3,5 Km
Price: 25 € per person

A soft rafting itinerary of great historical and archaeological interest, dedicated to the discovery of mills and fulling mills, which, thanks to the “Wool Arts,” made Florence famous from the thirteenth century onwards for its industrial activities. The guide will take you to incredible places along the Arno, which are only accessible by water, where for centuries the first woollen cloth was made, flour was ground, and foderi – log rafts used for constructing the Opera del Duomo and Pisa’s naval fleet – were transported. Just like the foderi, you will traverse the weirs made for these millenary mills. A unique experience combining history, culture and nature along the river Arno, right at the gates of Florence: the embarkation point can also be reached by public transport: the ATAF number 14 bus to the Girone terminus. Upon request, it is possible to do the tour with an archaeologist on board.
